Student of Jacques - Louis David, Michel - François Damane - Demartrais was a French painter and engraver from Paris. During the Franco-Napoleonic wars, he stayed in Russia where he executed drawings and maps for the tsar. Among his Russian plates, there are the series Costumes et Usages de Russie and the two aquatints Vues des environs de Narva (file n°11501) and Vue de la perspective de Nevsky.
Built in the 1710s at the request of Peter the Great, the Nevski Prospect is today the main artery of St. Petersburg. One can see on the print the Stroganov Palace.
