The Recueil Jullienne, in which this plate is from, is due to the initiative of the rich businessman and amateur Jean de Jullienne (1686-1766) who, from 1723 approximately to 1735, gathered engravers and publishers to propose for sale nearly six hundred plates connected in four volumes, posthumous tribute to the genius of Antoine Watteau. The first two volumes Figures de Différents Caractères reproduce Watteau's drawings. The other two, designated under the title of Oeuvre gravé, reproduce the paintings and ornaments. rançois Boucher was the main engraver of the Figures de Différents Caractères.
