Goetz process (carborundum printmaking)

Impression on wove paper, numbered 9/55 and signed in pencil.

In the world of printmaking, Goetz's name is often associated with a technical invention, called the "Goetz process" or "carborundum printmaking". The treatise that followed this discovery, entitled La Gravure au carborundum (Maeght,1969) has widely disseminated this technique among engravers, and in particular Joan Miró.

This process is the result of technical experiments that Goetz undertook with chemists, around the curious material that is carborundum. Attached to a plate with a varnish, this abrasive silicon carbide-based powder offers a granular texture into which the ink can penetrate. It creates rich material effects, intense colours and subtle gradations.

Plate: 198 x 367 mm.

Sheet: 330 x 500 mm.

Condition: slight foxing in the upper margin.
